These last few weeks have been shaped by incredible events in our country that have highlighted collective suffering and collective hope through community. The fires in Los Angeles have devastated entire communities and the reverberations are felt nationwide. Witnessing the capacity for natural disaster impact such a thriving and dense city was truly humbling. I cannot fathom the amount of loss that victims have experienced- whether they’ve lost homes and schools and businesses to the flames or to smoke and toxic gas contamination, families are left starting from scratch with whatever they left home with. 

I’ve been personally overwhelmed by the amount of friends in the creative community that have been majorly affected by this tragedy. As an artist and designer, I have been thrilled to connect with so many incredible makers in the LA area over the last few years. We know many artists in the area, some of whom have lost studios and entire bodies of artwork in the fires. Since starting WAYWAY, I’ve been so encouraged by other designers and small-business owners based in LA who have offered me tremendous support leading up to and in the first few months after our launch. We have been in touch with most of these friends over the last couple of weeks and thought it important to share the work that they are doing in their own communities to rebuild. It’s also immensely important during this time to support these small businesses in order to pour support directly back into those communities.  I hope you will check out these friends and follow them on social media. Consider contributing to their businesses and sharing in the collective work of repair and recovery. 

It felt poignant to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday at a moment when we are hopefully coming together as a nation to lift up those in need and fortify our communities through Love.  I am struck by MLK’s perseverance in the face of adversity and his unwavering commitment to Love as a motivating force and call to action. 

As we move through this season I hope that you all are able to draw near to the ones you love.
