HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

I gotta ask- are we saying RIP to DIY costumes?? :( My kids beg me, “Please can we buy it??!” I guess it’s too hard to compete with the flashy store bought kits when my arms are full of duct tape, pipe cleaners, and fabric paint…  I wonder about this shift in our consumer mindset though. What does it mean that we’d rather scroll and click to purchase online rather than spend time together inventing, and getting messy? I get it that we’re tired! And we have a lot going on, don't get me wrong. I just wish we could keep that creative spark alive and convince our kids that making things together creates way sweeter memories.

I remember when I was growing up, gathering things from around our house to put together a costume being a huge part of the magic! My mom pulling out all her sparkly costume jewelry for a princess outfit, or every black belt and accessory for my Zorro moment. It was so much fun to hunt for the perfect piece to bring the vision to life. Of course there was a last minute run to Total Crafts (no Michael’s for us in those days!) for some velcro or buttons to complete the look. But most of it was about brainstorming together and getting scrappy (pun intended) with what we had lying around. My mom could pull off the best costumes with the most random closet finds. Those are the memories that I hold close and would love to translate for my kids. SO! In the spirit of DIY Halloween days and my own nostalgia, I’ve put together some inspo with our very own WAYWAY as the base for some pretty nifty, last minute costumes (leaning into my old school mom vibes…)

The bottom line is it’s fun to get kids to think about what we already have and get creative with it!! Cheers to a spirit of creativity and imagination and PLAY. We learn so much by slowing down and thinking differently about the things we already have and how we use them. There is so much magical thinking that comes out of this process! WAYWAY is all about helping kids find their own way while being gentle on the earth and its resources together ;)

At WAYWAY we’re thinking about the earth and our relationship to it- the textiles that we use are gentler on the earth and require less resources to process. When we slow down and consider what we consume and how it affects our ecosystem, we soften and understand that we are all interconnected and our survival depends on the survival of the earth. When we pay attention to our impact- on the earth and on others– we can draw closer to one another in community.
